Helium is a chemical element with the symbol He and atomic number 2. It is the first in the noble gas group in the periodic table. Its boiling point is the lowest among all the elements. Helium is the second lightest and second most abundant element in the observable universe
Helium is named for the Greek Titan of the Sun, Helios. It was first detected as an unknown, yellow spectral line signature in sunlight, during a solar eclipse in 1868. This yellow spectral line is reflected in Helium House’s colour, yellow.
In Helium House we are proud that our students demonstrate the ASPIRE values for learning and life that permeate throughout our Academy and our Trust. Helium students seek to emulate our House Hero, Charles Coulson, who is a role model for many of these values.
Charles Coulson's major scientific work was as a pioneer of the application of the quantum theory of valency to problems of molecular structure, dynamics and reactivity.
Coulson was a senior lecturer, Fellow and Professor of Mathematics and Science in a number of prestigious universities including Oxford. He set up and directed the Mathematical Institute.
In each of his successive appointments, Coulson attracted an active and enthusiastic group of graduate students, short and long term visitors, many of whom held senior university and industrial positions in England and other countries. Many of his students went on to make major contributions in several fields of endeavour.
